BS/MD Testimonials
Dr. Darlene Diep is an exceptional BS/MD counselor and a truly remarkable person. She played a pivotal role in helping my daughter gain acceptance to her top-choice BS/MD program during the 2025-2026 cycle.
We began working with Darlene and Shrey at Application Architect in the summer before senior year, much later than what is typically recommended. While my daughter had solid academics along with meaningful community service, research, and clinical experiences, we were concerned that her overall profile might not be competitive enough for BS/MD programs. From our very first meeting, Darlene’s honesty stood out. She was candid about our chances, which we deeply appreciated, and we entered the process with realistic expectations. Despite this, we wanted to give it our best shot since my daughter was fully committed to pursuing a career in medicine, either through BS/MD or through the regular route. Somehow, Darlene recognized this passion immediately, and she encouraged us to move forward and give it our best effort. Although Darlene did not have direct availability, she suggested that we work with one of the other mentors in the team, Shrey. She assured us that she would remain closely involved throughout – and she absolutely did.
Working with Darlene and Shrey was one of the best decisions we made. In hindsight, there is no way my daughter would have achieved acceptances to five BS/MD programs, including her top choice, without their mentorship and support. From building a balanced college list to brainstorming and refining countless program-specific essays, they were consistently responsive, thoughtful, and always available to help.
Darlene’s deep knowledge of BS/MD programs was invaluable, especially when planning application timelines. However, the true value of her guidance became most evident during interview season. As interview invitations began to arrive to our pleasant surprise, Darlene worked closely with my daughter to prepare her for both traditional and MMI formats. The mock interviews with Darlene and Shrey were incredibly effective, and Darlene’s detailed feedback after each session was extremely insightful. Her post-interview notes on how to improve made me wonder how she could multi-task so efficiently while conducting these mock interviews.
My daughter ultimately received five interview invitations and was accepted to all five programs. This wonderful outcome is a testament to Darlene’s experience and expertise, particularly her structured and highly effective approach to identifying each student’s strengths, building a cohesive narrative, crafting compelling applications, and preparing thoroughly for interviews.
What sets Darlene apart most is her integrity. She never recommended unnecessary sessions and ensured that every interaction was meaningful and productive. For those wondering whether working with a BS/MD counselor is worth it, my answer is simple: it absolutely is – if you’re working with someone like Darlene.
More than anything, I am deeply grateful that my daughter has found a mentor like Darlene. This kind of guidance is truly priceless!- BV

Dr. Darlene is an excellent BS/MD counselor and an amazing person. She is truly committed to her students’ success and genuinely cares about your wellbeing throughout what is an incredibly demanding process. I attribute so many of my successes to her hard work and dedication to me as her student.
She became my counselor at the end of junior year and we got to work right away. She encouraged me to get an early start on my personal statement, helped me finalize my college list quickly, and immediately knew which BS/MD programs were the right fit for me. I was ultimately really happy with how my personal statement turned out and how accurately it captured who I am. Her knowledge of BS/MD programs across the country is truly unmatched, and she gave me more useful insight into each program than their own websites ever could, always steering me toward reliable information when I needed it most.
Even as the school year picked up and I found myself balancing academics and extracurriculars, Darlene was always there. There were times I was writing essays closer to deadlines than I would have liked, and she still made time for me without hesitation, despite being a practicing physician with a business and a full personal life. Her dedication to her students is something I really admire.
What makes her stand out beyond her expertise is the genuine connection she builds with her students. BS/MD applications are an emotionally tough process, and rejections are hard to deal with. What I really valued was that whenever I was rejected from a program, it felt like she was feeling it with me. Rather than pushing me to move on quickly, she gave me the space I needed to process it, while also reminding me that things have a way of working out the way they are supposed to. That perspective meant so much to me during those months, and looking at where I ended up, I truly believe she was right. She always found a way to keep me grounded and hopeful even in the hardest moments.
She also became someone I could talk to easily about more than just applications. As we had more meetings, our conversations naturally grew to include my personal experiences and goals. Even when I was really stressed near the end of application season, she was able to talk me through everything and gave me the confidence I needed to keep going.
When we moved into interview and CASPer preparation, her knowledge was exceptional once again. Her interview coaching was thorough, her question variety was impressive, and she always found something specific I could improve on. One moment that really stood out to me was during my MMI, when I was asked a question that touched on medical ethics. Because Darlene had introduced me to the Washington Ethics resources and helped me work through them during our prep sessions, I was able to draw on that knowledge directly in my answer. My interviewer responded really positively to it, and I walked out of that interview knowing that her preparation had made a real difference. Her CASPer prep was equally strong and I scored in the 4th quartile, which I know contributed to my outcome as well.
I cannot recommend Darlene highly enough. Working with her did not just help me get through the application process. It genuinely changed how I see medicine and my future in it. She helped me understand that everything has a way of working itself out and that medicine is far more multifaceted than I had ever appreciated. That shift in perspective has stuck with me in ways I did not expect. I have even decided to switch my major from biology to public health because of the broader lens she helped me develop. I could not have asked for a better counselor or a better person in my corner, and I know the things she has taught me will carry me far beyond this process. —A.C.

Dr. Darlene Diep is an excellent BSMD counselor as well as an amazing person. She is extremely committed to the success of her students and genuinely cares about our wellbeing and mental health throughout the process. I was able to receive three interviews and I attribute this achievement to Darlene’s guidance. She helped craft my application, hammer out essays, and ultimately stand out among applicants, especially in these competitive applicant pools.
I reached out to her in my junior year and she helped me with my summer program essays and crafting a unique personal statement. She also really helped me narrow down which schools to apply to based on where my applicant profile matches and where she thought I would thrive. As a California student with limited in-state BSMD options, she was able to help me apply to schools that are more receptive to out of state applicants.
Throughout the essay writing process, Darlene was extremely proactive in editing my essays. Despite being a physician, she always provided meaningful suggestions about content, often within the same day. I truly look up to her as she balances her professional life and remains dedicated to her students.
Darlene also helped me create a cohesive application based on my activities and stories. She always encouraged me to dig deeper and clearly articulate my motivations, dreams, and experiences which I believe really made me stand out.
When I got my first interview invitation, I was very nervous about MMI. Darlene was able to break it down for me and give me a formula for crafting successful, meaningful answers. After a few of her prep sessions, I felt extremely prepared for all of the questions the interviewers threw at me. One of my interviewers even told me that I had answered an MMI question very thoroughly and that she hoped to see me on campus.
Throughout the interview preparation process, I also learned a lot about myself. Interview prep with Darlene has genuinely made me a better, more open-minded person, and I notice its effects in everyday life. I am so so grateful for Darlene and all her help. I know the values she has instilled in me will allow me to thrive in medical school and beyond. She has my highest recommendation for anyone who wants to apply to BSMD programs. —S.N.

After my first interview, I learned my lesson and worked with her much more for the second time and she consistently went above and beyond in giving her time, her attention, and her care. Working with Darlene was one of the most valuable parts of my BS/MD application journey. I began working with her before my application cycle started, and she helped me thoughtfully craft my Why Medicine and personal statement essays so they were truly reflective of my own experiences and motivations. Her guidance pushed me to think more deeply about my story and present my application as strongly and authentically as possible.
One of the parts of the BS/MD process that initially made me the most nervous was the interview stage, especially the MMI format, since it was completely unfamiliar to me before starting applications. Darlene walked me through the entire process step by step, providing practice resources and conducting mock interviews that helped me understand what to expect. During our sessions, we were able to dive into the details of my responses and refine how I communicated my ideas. That preparation made a huge difference in helping me feel confident going into my interview days and ultimately contributed to my acceptances.
I truly do not think I could have navigated the BS/MD application process without Darlene’s expertise and deep knowledge of the programs. Beyond the application process itself, I also gained valuable insights from her about the path to medicine and the mindset needed to pursue it. I am incredibly grateful for her guidance and would strongly recommend her to any student navigating BS/MD applications. –R.J.

For me, interviewing was a big struggle, trying to think on the spot while also coming up with smart responses, all in the allotted time they give. However, through my sessions with Darlene, interviewing went from something I tried to avoid to something I actually enjoyed. One thing I really appreciated was how she didn’t sugarcoat any of the advice and recommendations she had and let me know all the ways I could improve my response right from session one. Each of her responses was really detailed and gave me advice that was truly unique, and information I couldn’t find anywhere on the internet. By the end of the first session, I knew exactly what I needed to practice, from both her advice during the call and the post-call notes she sent. In addition, if I had any questions whatsoever when practicing, she was really open to the numerous questions I had, no matter the time. BS/MD admission, as many know, is extremely cutthroat, but my sessions with Darlene undoubtedly helped me stand out in this competitive process. By the time I actually had my interviews, through the various questions and feedback Darlene provided, I was able to present my authentic self, and leave the interview knowing I had given it my very best. —S.K.

I don’t think I could have navigated my interview process without Darlene. She pushed me to think much harder about my responses in her mock interviews and helped me develop different unique viewpoints of the same situation. What still surprises me is her turnaround time. Even though she is a practicing physician, she would constantly send back really detailed suggestions on the exact same day.
BS/MD Interviews were a huge source of stress for me as I was completely unfamiliar with them. Here’s the thing about Darlene: she doesn’t sugarcoat her feedback. She lets you know exactly where you need to improve right from the first session. But she also breaks the whole thing down step by step and gives you strategies for developing solid answers. After doing a few mock interviews with her, the anxiety just sort of dropped away. Dr. Darlene Diep is no doubt one of the best BS/MD coaches. I utilized her services while preparing for my first BS/MD MMI interview. Interviewing for me has never been my strong suit, and I always struggled with my speaking skills and conveying my ideas clearly. So, when I met her in my first meeting, I was a little bit intimidated. But, I quickly warmed up to her as she provided many helpful resources and showed genuine commitment to her students’ success.
She gives honest yet sometimes tough feedback. However, when I struggled to answer an interview question, she guided me towards the answer. Instead of directly stating the answer to the question, Dr. Diep guided me by asking thoughtful questions to get me to the answer on my own. This approach not only improved my interview skills but also strengthened my critical thinking and problem solving skills.
Aside from being an effective instructor, she is very engaging and easy to talk to. Time flies so quickly in her sessions. She also incorporates her experiences from interviewing other students and her journey in medical school and residency to guide her teaching.
